Southern Consolidates Hold on Championship
Rugby Competition
Southern consolidated its lead in the championship when the Otago Rugby Football Union’s senior competition was continued on Saturday. The meeting of the leaders with University A attracted a crowd of about 6000 to Carisbrook, where Southern won a well-fought and interesting game by 6 points to 3. This was University A’s second defeat in the three matches it has played during the past week. In the early match, Pirates gave one of the brightest displays of the season to defeat Dunedin by 24 points to 3. Zingari-Richmond scored an easy N win by 26 points to 5 in the match against Alhambra, at Tahuna Park, and at Port Chalmers, Kaikorai, showing more finish, beat the home team by 12 points to 6. Taieri won a close game against Training College at Bathgate Park by 8 points to 6, and Union defeated University B by 6 points to 3 at the North Ground. The games were played in bright sunshine, but the grounds were heavy after rain.
The day’s results were:— Southern 6, University A 3. Pirates 24, Dunedin 3. Kaikorai 12, Port Chalmers 6. Zingari-Richmond 26, Alhambra 5. Taieri 8, Training College 6. Union 6, University B 3.
