FIRST VISIT
SOUTH AFRICA STAR SERVED AS ESCORT CARRIER PA AUCKLAND, June 6. On her first visit to New Zealand as a merchant ship, the South Africa Star arrived at Auckland on Saturday from London. Built in the United States in 1944 as a Victory ship, the South Africa Star was converted to an escort aircraft carrier, and was known as H.M.S. Reaper. She visited New Zealand in November, 1945, as an escort carrier of the British Pacific Fleet. Her arrival at Auckland on Saturday completed her first voyage as a cargo Sll A'feature of the South Africa Star’s construction is her unusually large cargo capacity of 731.000 cubic feet. Commanded by Captain R. White. D S C., the vessel has accommodation for 26 passengers, and her speed is 17 knots.
