EARTHQUAKE FUND
NOT FOR OTHER USES PA GISBORNE. June 5. The argument that the Earthquake Fund should be drawn on to provide relief for the flood sufferers in Poverty Bay was advanced to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Cullen, who said the fund was established by Statute for a particular purpose. It could not be diverted from that purpose, even though it might seem practicable to • many people. The money in the fund was levied from insurers all over the country and held in trust for emergencies under the original objects and the Statutes contributors would have every right to criticise any diversion of funds to other . purposes. The provision oi finance to meet the emergency m Poverty Bay was the obligation of the Government and there was no suggestion that the funds would be madeauate.
