SCOTTISH CONCERT
COMPETITIONS CONCLUDED PERFORMERS ACCLAIMED A particularly apt choice was made by Mr A Jones in his selection for his opening song at the Scottish variety concert which was held in the Town Hall Concert Chamber on Saturday night to mark the conclusion of the centennial piping and dancing competitions which started on the previous Saturday. Mr Jones sang " Tire March of the Cameron Men ” after the concert had been opened by the Mayor, Mr D. C. Cameron, and the New Zealand president of the Piping and Dancing Association, Mr I. D. Cameron (Masterton). The Mayor congratulated the Otago centre for its excellent work in training the youth of the town in Scottish dancing, music and culture generally. He had been delighted with the fine appearance of the children in the competitions. Mr I. D. Cameron endorsed the Mayor’s remarks and added that the traditional Scottish folklore being cultivated by -the Otago centre under the presidency of Mr T. Stuart was widely appreciated. Selections were played by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, and the Burns Highland Pipe Band, while two members of the newly formed Dunedin Ladies' Scottish Pipe Band played a duet. Other musical items in the traditional style were solos by Miss Margaret Pratt (Dunedin), Miss Phyllis Scott (Gore) and Mr Frank Cherry, while Miss Scott and Mr Jones sang several humorous duets. Mr R. Wilson Brown’s humorous items were also well received by the audience, which filled the hall , Other items on the programme included different varieties of dances and a brilliant comet solo by the New Zealand champion, Mr K. Smith. Variety was provided in the concert by the second and last items, an Irish Jig and an Irish reel. During the afternoon the judges summed up their decisions, and the presentation of championship certificates and trophies was made by Mr I. D. Cameron.
