HOUSE AUCTIONED
MANY ATTEND—ONE LUCKY The selling of a house by l auction attracted over 100 people to a city auctioneer’s premises yesterday, and, after some eager bidding, the 35 wouldbe purchasers who were willing to pay the maximum reserve price took part in a ballot to decide which of the applicants was to take possession. The successful candidate was Mr W. Stevenson, a young factory manager, who, since his transfer from Auckland six months ago, has been unable to obtain a dwelling of any kind. Mr Stevenson, with his wife and two children, has been living with relatives. Bidding began at £2OOO, and only £SO bids were accepted until the figure rose to £2350, when bidding closed. The names of the 35 people prepared to pay the maximum reservft were then placed in a box, shaken up in the approved style, and one slip of paper chosen. Mr Stevenson will shortly move into a six-roomed house in Highgate.
