POLIOMYELITIS OUTBREAK EXTENT NOT ALARMING P.A. WELLINGTON, May 24. While there had been an increase in poliomyelitis cases in recent weeks, the situation had by no means reached alarming proportions, said the assistant medical officer of health for the Wellington district, Dr J. K. Kennedy, to-day. Answering parents’ complaints concerning the reopening of schools, Dr Kennedy said they could rest assured that the department was keeping the position under close review, no stone being left unturned to ensure that the epidemic was kept in check. Where cases were reported, the schools concerned would be closed. At least two Wellington schools had had their vacations extended because cases had been reported among pupils. He considered the vacation period was sufficient to remove the danger of infection among pupils of schools where cases had been previously reported.
