LOSS OF CLOTHING

FIRE AT THE HERMITAGE

P.A. TIMARU, May 11. Practically all the personal clothing and effects, uninsured, of two members of the domestic staff at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, were destroyed by fire, which broke out in their bedrooms just before midnight on Monday. Because dense smoke spread through the gelling and seeped into- other rooms, a warning was given to the guests by the management to be ready to evacuate the building. Prompt action by the guides, staff and many guests prevented the fire from spreading, however, and it was soon under control.
