PLANTATION INSPECTED
Tree-planting Association An inspection of a plantation of about 400 pinus insignis trees and Douglas firs planted in 1940 at Lake Waitaki was made by members of the North Otago Treeplanting Association on Saturday. The association has plans for an active season In his address to a meeting held in the Lake Waitaki Hall, Mr Hamilton said the tour was to encourage the planting of trees In every part of North Otago where there was a reasonable chance of success. The association would undertake the planting of tyees where possible, but in more remote areas it required the cooperation of local committees to tend the trees. Mr Hamilton referred to the many attractions at Kurow, and expressed the opinion that tree planting could be carried out in that area to advantage. He said he would like to see' a committee formed in Kurow which could work with the Oamaru Association. The association would be glad to supply suitable trees. Mr A. C. Robinson expressed the opinion that interest could be revived at Kurow. There were several reserves in the district ,which could be greatly improved by planting trees. Dr E. S. Stubbs made reference to the work already done at Lake Waitaki, and congratulated those responsible for the attractive streets with neat lawns.
After the meeting an eight-year-old victory English beech. tree was planted on the north side of the Lake Waitaki Bowling Club's green by Mr Hamilton. On the return journey to Oamaru the party were the guests of Mr and Mrs L. Pavletich, of “ Station Peak.”
