HORSE CARNIVAL
GOOD ATTENDANCE AT PORTOBELLO Indifferent weather on Saturday did not deter about 400 persons from attending the Otago Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Asosciation’s light horse carnival and sports meeting at the Portobello Showgrounds. There was occasional light rain but all events but one were held. The’greasy state of the ground, however, tightened ‘up the test of horsemanship, and because of the attendant danger of horses slipping, the Women’s Irish Derby was cancelled. Much interest was centred in the tug-of-war, in which teams from Palmerston, Dunedin, Macandrew Bay and Portobello competed. Dunedin Football Club won in the pull-off with Macandrew Bay.
