Harriers

START OF NEW SEASON Presbyterian club.—The season was declared open by the Rev. D. B. Martin at the St. Clair Presbyterian Church Hall. . Mr Clark, president of the centre, also spoke. A run was held along the Blackhead cliffs and back via Corstorphine. In the fast pack, F. Weedon was first, D. Falloon second and L. Burgess third. G. Manson, H. McMaster and N. Kennett in the slow pack, and B. Smith, S. Lawson and J. Frude in the colts, were prominent. , Celtic United Club.—The run was held from the St. Clair Baths. In the senior pack, which ran to Tomahawk and return, D. Gallivan. H. Coombes and M. Pettit were well placed, The colts ran over the hill past Cargill’s Castle towards Tunnel Beach and returned via Corstorphine. ’No run home was held, but T Williams, T. Direen and E. Tyler were prominent. Civil Service Club.—From the St. ICilda pavilion, the various packs proceeded towards Tomahawk, via Tainui. G. Nelson, L. Bradshaw and R. Rudkin were first home in the fast pack, while W. Simpson, N. Rolton "and G. McKersey were prominent in the slow pack. Among the juniors, J. Law, P. Fraser and B. Frude were well placed, and the first colts home were Mayfield, Moffat and Wilkinson. Prior to the club run, the One and a-half Miles Maiden Race was held over the Victoria road course to the Kennels and return, to the St. Kilda terminus. B. Eckhoff was first, E. Cadness second and Z. Unkovitch third. Time, 9min 15sec. Leith Club.—The run was from the St. Clair Baths and after reaching Cargill's Castle three packs were formed. The slow and colts’ packs took similar courses round Corstorphine and the St. Clair golf links. Among the runners prominent were J. Sprague, W. Dwyer and C. Donaldson. The slow pack’s run home resulted:—D. Milne 1, P. Boag 2 and G Patrick 3. The fast pack ran to Tunnel Beach and Green Island Beach, returning via the St. Clair golf links. No run home was held.

St. Kilda Club.—A run was held from the North-East Valley School. The pack under the whistle of L. Columbus ran up Bethune’s Gully to . the Brown House, returning via the Normanby terminus. The run home resulted in A. Miles gaihing first place, H. Taggart second and R Smith third. Mornlngton Club.—The packs ran from the St. Clair Surf Club pavilion. The slow pack ran to the top of Blackhead Hill and back along the road through Corstorphine. The fast pack ran across country until they met the Brighton road half a mile from Green Island. In the slow pack R. Adams was first, R. Blugdon second and A. Beveridge third. In the fast pack C. Jelley was first, W. Burrows second and M. Munro third. Caversham Club.—The run was held from St. Mark’s Hall, Green Island. Four packs were formed, the trail leading up Adams Hill, across to the Green Island Beach, and back via the Brighton-Green Island road. In the colts’ pack N. Sidon, N. Hair and R. Croat were first home. D. Keene, R. Dodds and L. Sligo in the juniors, W. Doull, K. Knox and B. Morrison in the slow pack, and C. Bower, J. Cook and J. Sherwood in the fast pack were well placed. Anglican Club.—A run was held from the home of Mr and Mrs A. C. Wilson, of Brighton. The junior pack, under Acting Captain Marett, branched off below Serogg’s Hill and travelled over rough country until they reached the coast. Doug. Williams and W. Burridge were well to the fore. The senior pack, led by Captain A. C. Wilson, skirted Scrogg’s Hill and came on- to the Waihola road, and then to the Chain Hills. In the run home J. Hyslop, George Davies and I McMillan were the leaders.

University Club.—The opening run was held from the University, through the Gardens, to Dalriiore, and back via NorthEast Valley. The pack split naturally into three groups on the run home, those fit, those not so fit, and others. A popular innovation was the running of a women’s steeplechase after the club run. Miss J. Baker was first, Miss Salter second, and Miss Gibb third. The Stanley Shield was won by Lower Studholme Hostel.
