LAWN TENNIS

WALKER CUP FINAL In the final for the Walker Cup, which is competed for by the Women’s Singles champions of the clubs affiliated to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, Miss M. Pyle (University) defeated Miss M. Robertson (St. Clair) 2 —6, B—6, 6—2. The match was remarkable for the change of fortunes which occurred. Miss Robertson dominated the first half, and, mainly through deep, strong driving to the base line, combined with shrewd drop shots, won the first set 6 —2 and led 4 —l in the second set. At this stage, however, Miss Pyle began to settle down, and Miss Robertson lost her length in drives, whilst her drop shots were not as effective. Miss Pyle evened the score at s—all, taking the set at B—6. In the third set Miss Robertson’s play deteriorated still further, and, although still displaying a stroke equipment superior to her opponent, appeared to lack the ability to counter the steadiness of the University player, who made some brilliant cross-court passing shots whenever the occasion demanded. . , B Grade Final Taieri defeated Caversham 9—7 in the final of the Mixed B Grade Championship. This event had been postponed, as several players in both teams were playing in the Otago junior championships.
