WANGANELLA REPAIRS
LENGTHY STAY IN DOCK WINTER PROTECTION FOR WORKMEN P.A. WELLINGTON, Apl. 17. Work on the Wanganella is proceeding satisfactorily, but the vessel will be in the floating dock during the severest winter months. Accordingly, steps have been taken to control the bitter northerlies which frequently sweep across the floor of the dock. At the northern end, workmen have erected a tall wooden windbreak which will take nmst of the sting out of the northerlies. and as an added protection, the space between the ship’s sides and the dock has been walled in some distance astern of the damaged portion. This will make conditions considerably more comfortable for the large number of men engaged on the repair job during the winter. Outwardly there has been little apparent progress in the repairs just recently because most of the work has been going on inside the ship’s structure. Most of the temporary wooden pillars which were erected inside to take the weight of the superstructure have been removed and new permanent pillars have been put in. Now that the temporary wooden structure has been removed better progress is expected on plating the underneath and on the tank tops.
