HUMANE SLAUGHTER

REPRESENTATION TO MINISTER P.A. WELLINGTON, Apl. 16. To support a petition for the enforcement of more humane means of slaughtering livestock, a deputation led by Mr Geoffrey Hodson, chairman of the executive committee of the combined animal welfare organisations of New Zealand, met the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Cullen, to-day. The deputation represented the Justices of the Peace Association, the National Council of Women, the New Zealand Vegetarian Society, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection and the Co-operative Women’s Guild of New Zealand. The petition asked that all animals slaughtered in New Zealand abbattoirs and freezing works should be instantaneously killed or stunned by means of a mechanically operated instrument in good repair and that this humane killing be made compulsory. The Minister promised favourable consideration of the representations.
