RECORD FIGURES

POPPY DAY APPEAL ANOTHER SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE Record figures were again established in the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association annual Poppy Day appeal, conducted yesterday. Last year, the record sum of £2502 14s Id was raised, but this was increased by nearly £IOO, to £2596 9s 8d in yesterday’s appeal. About 80,000 poppies—the traditional emblem of Anzac Day—were placed on sale in the Otago district, and they met a ready sale, especially in the city. According to one tally, the secretary of the association, Mr O. L. Ferens, told the Daily Times last night, only 2 people out of 180 did not have a poppy. Appreciation of the public’s generosity was expressed by Mr Ferefts on behalf of the executive, and he also made grateful reference to the voluntary helpers and to the staffs of the Dunedin Savings Bank and the National Bank fox' their assistance. “It was noticeable,” Mr Ferens said, “ when the cash boxes were being opened that many large donations had been made.” A greater interest had been shown by primary and secondary schools, Mr Ferens added.
