RECORD DAY AT RIVERTON

(Special) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 27. The Riverton Racing Club held the first day of its Easter meeting under perfect weather and track conditions. It was a record one in every respect, there being an estimated attendance of 12,000, and both the gate receipts and totalisator turnover were fresh record totals for the club. The racing was full of interest, there being several surprise results. The Dunedin-owned Joy giver won his second Riverton Cup, scoring an end-to-end win.

Joygiver was closely attended by Pensacola, Great Coon, Sir Garnish, Sea Power, Full Play, Benbecula ar.d Loyai Lady for the greater part of the journey. Pensacola was the first beaten and Joygiver had Great Coon’s measure immediately the field straightened up in the run home. Sir Garnish put in his claim at the distance post, but Joygiver hung on under pressure to beat him by a neck. Foxchase, who tailed the field most of the way and was still last at the straight entrance, came home with a fine run to get up for third. Loyal Lady (fourth) had every chance, and next to finish were Full Play, Pride of Mossburn, Great Coon, Sea Power, Benbecula and Sumra with Pensacola last. The Great Western Steeplechase was robbed of a let of interest when Ruling Moment. More Boa and the favourite. Irish Wit. fell at the first fence. Bravura tried to win all the way and had opened up a big lead from Eleanor Star. Paladeo. Tamerlane and Ballyaggan in the middle stages. Bravura risked some of his fences down the back the last time, and with half a mile to run, Eleanor Star was within striking distance of the pacemaker. Eleanor Star and Bravura took the last fence together, and in the run home Eleanor Star outstayed Bravura fo beat him by four lengths. Paladeo was eight lengths back third, with Ballayagan five lengths further away, fourth. Tamerlane was the only other to complete the course. Courtdress fell at the first fence into the back the last time round. Final Dash Bath Slipper was at double figure odds in the Aparima Handicap and she won going away from her field after being well back in the middle stages. Luminous Knight tried to win all the way, and at the straight entrance he was three lengths clear of Geisha Girl, Naughty Lady, Lovemorn, Sanskrit and Sterling Lad. Luminous Knight was headed by Lovemorn with 50 yards to run and then Bath Slipper dashed up on the outer to secure a neck decision. Lovemorn beat Luminous Knight by half a length, with Sanskrit, who did not get a good run over the last furlong, close up fourtn. Giesha Girl, Crinkle, Sterling Lad, and Haughty Dick were next. Favourite Wins Narrowly Sal’s Pal was backed down to a short price for the Pourakino Handicap, and he won narrowly but well. Nigger Lad shaded Sal’s Pal and Heroic Girl down the back straight, where Hunting Charm, Connaught, and Merry Lancer headed the others. Nigger Lad was first into the straight, but he was immediately disposed of by Sal’s Pal. Inside the distance Heroic Girl and Merry Lancer, who had been chopped back at the start, put in their claims. Heroic Girl failed by a neck to head Sal’s Pal, with Merry Lancer finishing fast haif a length back tljird and Batal fourth. Stirring Finish

There was a stirring finish to the Visitors’ Handicap, when a dead heat was declared between'Jan and Kasimov, with Faites vos Jeux a nose away third. Faites vos Jeux and Kasimov disputed the lead into the straight from Plain Pal, Jan, and Jimmy the One. In the run home, Jan, Faites vos Jeux, and Kasimov sorted themselves out. Jan was hampered in putting in her challenge between the other pair, but she got up to make a dead heat of it with Kasimov. Faites vos Jeux was a nose back third, with Jimjny the One four lengths away. .. . At a subsequent meeting of the Judicial Committee, G. W. Wright, the rider of Kasimov, was charged with interference to Jan. It was decided to place Jan first and Kasimov second and to suspend Wright for three months. At Double Figures Alsvider finished with a fine run to win the Longwood Handicap at doublefigure odds. At the straight entrance he was nicely placed in behind Super Flight, Bonny Royal, Victory Star, and Dark Chief. Alsvider was the first to head Super Flight, but he had to be, hard ridden to hold off late challenges by ' Winning Cheer and String Band, who had been slow away. Flibbertigibbet got up for fourth, with Super Flight, Dark Chief. Bonny Royal, and Victory Star close up next. Double Light Wins Double Light justified his choice as favourite for the Waiau Steeplechase, and he won decisively after jumping to the front at the fourth to last fence. He won comfortably from Tin Hat, who beat Debater by four lengths for second. First Out was just cut out of third money in a photo finish. Haughty Boa Was sent out a firm favourite for the Trial Handicap, but her stable mate upset calculations and paid a substantial dividend. The Saint and Haughty Boa made the running to the straight, where Red Money, Putechan, All Hurry, Winning Thorn, and Bayboa were handy The Saint was the first beaten, and Haughty Boa was tackled by Putechan. The last-named failed to hold off Bayboa, who carried on to secure a head decision. Haughty Boa vvas-'two lengths back third, with Winning Thorn fourth.
