North Otago Championships Fourteen New Records Fourteen new records were established at the North Otago Amateur Athletic Association’s championship meeting held on Saturday at the Showgrounds. In spite of inclement weather a large crowd was present. In the senior javelin H. Wills (Celtic United) broke R. McKenzie’s North Otago record of 158 ft 7in by throwing 172 ft 7in. W. Rorrows’s North Otago record of 4min 27 l-ssec in the mile was broken by W. H. Nelson (Civil Service), who covered the distance in 4min 25sec. S. Dawson (Leith) ran the 120 Yards Hurdles in 16sec to break A. G. Harper’s North Otago record of 16 l-ssec. Walking the mile in 7min 8 l-ssec, J. R. Hyslop (Anglican) broke R. J- Watson’s North Otago record of l 7min 16 2-ssec. In the 220 Yards Senior Hurdles S. R. Dawson (Leith) broke A. G. Holland's record of 27 l-ssec. Dawson was again successful in the Broad Jump by increasing A. A. Cameron’s North Otago record by 3in to 21ft lin. I. Gardiner, by throwing 113 ft lOjin in the discus, broke A. A. Cameron’s previous North Otago record of 105 ft llin. In the junior championship A. G. Lawless (Leith) broke R. Paton’s previous North Otago record of sft 2Jin by jumping sft 63in. Lawless also set a new record in the 440 Yards by covering the distance in 54 3-ssec. J. Whelan was the previous record holder. A. S. McTavish s record of 10 4-ssec in the 100 Yards was lowered by R. A. Elder (North Otago), who covered the distance in 10 3-ssec. Y. Williams (Otago Ladies) broke the North Otago records in the Women s Discus and Broad Jump. The Otago relay team also broke the record of 55 l-ssec by covering the distance in 54 l-ssec. W H. Nelson, in one of his last appearances in New Zealand before leaving for the Olympic Games, thrilled the spectators by his brilliant performance in the Mild Senior Championship. Nelson opened a big gap in the early stages of the event and a brilliant burst of speed at the end drew much applause, int president of the North Otago Association. Mr R. E. Dimick, thanked Nelson for competing and wished him the best of luck in the Olympic Games. A. L. Fagg, the New Zealand title holder, gave an excellent exhibition in the Senior Pole Vault event. Fagg made an attempt to break his North Otago record of lift 6in, established six years ago and, although unsuccessful, cleared the bar at lift. Results were:— Senior Titles Hammer Throw: J.
