Harris (Conservative) 36,200 ■Harold Nicolson (Labour) 24,536 Air Vice Marshal Bennett (Liberal) .... .. 6,321 The vacancy was due to the resignation of Mr H. U. Willink. Seventylive per cent, of the electorate voted. Air Vice Marshal Bennett forfeits his deposit.
At the general election of 1945, the polling resulted: —Mr Willink (Conservative) 23,417, Miss M. G. Billson (Labour) 22,810; Sub-lieutenant J. M. Howard (Liberal) 10,714.
