Concessions to Aid Western Recovery
“ GEARING HER LIFE TO EUROPE ” New Zealand Press Association Special Correspondent. Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 12. The Foreign Secretary, Mr Ernest Bevin, is expected to announce at the Marshall aid conference of 16 nations in Paris next week, that Britain is to make sacrifices for the sake of Western European economic stability, which will include reducing imperial preferences. Various cuts will be made, not in the immediate future, but over a period of years* Mr Bevin and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, conferred on the Foreign Secretary’s statement and paper on Britain’s plans for “ moving into Europe.” It is understood that Mr Be,vin will acquaint the high commissioners with his speech before he leaves for Paris. The British Government’s view is that if the European recovery programme is to succeed, Britain must identify herself more closely with the economics of continental nations and “ gear her life to Europe.”
