Application of Higher Rates
An interesting position has arisen in regard to recent fare increases, first on City Corporation buses and now, since midnight last night, in respect to taxis. The City Corporation Transport Department established a precedent by raising the fares before final approval was granted. This was regarded as a formality. The taxis have followed suit, as the increase now in operation has not been finally approved by the Director of Stabilisation. It is understood, however, that the Metropolitan Licensing Authority yesterday issued an ultimatum to members of the taxi industry warning them that any premature increase would result in legal proceedings being taken. The authority comprises members of the Dunedin City Council, whose Transport Committee controls the buses. It is not known whether the authority intends also to take action against the Transport Committee.
