MAORI RUGBY TOUR
AUSTRALIAN VISIT UNLIKELY ACUTE SHIPPING POSITION P.A. AUCKLAND, Mar. 5. The question of a Maori Rugby team visiting Australia this year had not been considered by the Rugby Union Council. The shipping position definitely precluded any New Zealand Rugby team visiting Australia this season, and New Zealand’s first touring commitment was the visit of a Maori team to Fiji. This was stated by the chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, Mr S. S. Dean, commenting in a telephone interview to-day on the suggestion published in Australia that a Maori team might tour there this season. 'Provided transport could be arranged, a Maori team would tour Fiji, Mr Dean added. As an alternative it had been suggested that the New Zealand Union might invite a Fijian team to tour New Zealand. The whole question would be discussed at a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union next week.
