REFUSAL OF OVERTIME
WATERSIDERS’ REASONS GIVEN
NON-UNION LABOUR EMPLOYED PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 5. The Port Wyndham was worked on the Wellington waterfront to-day. The reasons for the refusal of overtime last night were stated by the secretary of the Wellington Waterside Union, Mr E. A Napier, to be the employment of non-union labour and the dirty nature of the basic slag cargo. Negotiations have been under way for sometime in an endeavour to arrange for better bags and better conditions for workers. The men had poor shower and changing facilities. These matters were now being considered by the Port Committee. The union considered that the employers had not made a proper and constitutional approach to the Port Committee for the employment of nonunion labour.
