NEW SUSPECTS

POLIOMYELITIS IN NORTHERN DISTRICTS P.A. WHANGAREI, Mar. 5. Two new suspect cases of infantile paralysis are reported from Hokianga. Both are children. One is from Otaua, South Hokianga, and is making satisfactory progress. The child is being kept in isolation, together with his whole family, at their home in a sparsely settled part of the district. The other, a child from Umawera, was taken to Rawene Hospital a week ago for observation, and is now believed by the hospital superintendent, Dr G. M. Smith, to be a mild case of infantile paralysis. Strong views are held by Dr Smith on the isolation of suspects and possible contacts. “In rural areas it is possible to prevent the spread of infantile paralysis by keeping people segregated in their own districts,” he said this morning. “It is different in urban areas, where whole families cannot effectively be isolated to the same extent.”

Another suspected case of infantile paralysis was admitted to the Auckland Hospital to-day. The patient is a child aged six years from Waiuku. There are now 41 positive cases and one suspect in the hospital.
