OLYMPIC TRIAL

w. H. NELSON IN FORM FAST RUN THREE MILES At Forbury Park on Saturday the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association ran a three-miles scratch race to give the New Zealand mile and three miles champion, W. H. Nelson, an opportunity to reach the standard set for selection in the Olympic Games team. Half-a-dozen well-known distance runners—J. D. Sinclair (University), A. A Jelley (Mornington), A. R. Geddes (Civil Service), A. McKernan (Civil Service) W. N. Burrows (Mornington) and E. ’ Cameron (Celtic United) started with him. Sinclair was the early leader, with Nelson running on his heels, the pair taking 30sec for the first 220 yards. They reached the half-mile mark in 2min 15sec, and the mile in 4min 45sec. Nelson took the lead, and the third half mile took 2min 22sec and the fourth 2min 17sec, making 9min 24sec for two miles. The next half was the slowest in the race, occupying 2mm 40sec and Nelson opened out in the last 880 yards, which he covered in 2min 15 3-ssec, making his three-mile time 14min 19 3-ssec, the fastest ever run in Otago. The following have been chosen to represent Otago at the New Zealand Junior and Women’s Championships at Auckland on March 12 and 13:— Miss S. Hardman, 75 Yards, 100 Yards and Broad Jump; Miss Y. Williams, Putting the Shot and Throwing the Discus; Miss N. Gourley, 80 Metres Hurdles ana High Jump: Miss V. R. Baird. .High Jump and 80 Metres Hurdles: Miss R. Pierson. 75 Yards and 100 Yards; B. Wise. 100 Yards and 220 Yards; G. Jeffries Hop, Step and Jump, High Jump and Throwing the Discus; J. Oliver, Pole Vault and Broad Jump. A team will be selected to represent Otago in the Women’s Relay Championship. Mrs K. Bradshaw will travel with the team as chaperone. CAPTAIN APPOINTED A. L. Fagg (Caversham) has been chosen to captain the team which will represent Otago at the National Track and Field Championships at Carisbrook on Friday and Saturday.
