RUTHLESS METHODS
EFFORTS TO CREATE CHAOS DISRUPTION OF BRITAIN’S ECONOMY Rec. 9 a.m. * LONDON, Feb. 28. “ The only people in Britain who opposed the Government’s appeal for voluntary restraint of prices and incomes were those trying to create economic chaos as they had done in other European countries, said Sir Stafford Cripps in a speech to-day. They see in chaos the best opportunity of enchaining the people in rigid and ruthless, discipline.” Sir Stafford in another speech said it was easy for irresponsibles desiring economic chaos for their own political advantage to urge workers to claim wage increases. They were attempting to cause a British economy collapse, which would mean hunger, starvation, and unemployment. They were following this line in all European coum tries where there were democratic Gov ernments, and were trying to defeat the Marshall Plan because they knew the plan would give stability to British economy and form of government which they disliked. Britain had an overall standard of living far above most European countries which adopted different methods, said Sir Stafford.
