TRIBUTES OF LEADERS

IMMENSELY IMPRESSED

THE PRIME MINISTER TRIBUTE TO THE CROWDS “I have been immensely impressed with the whole programme of events and celebrations which I have witnessed since I arrived in Dunedin more than a week ago,” the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, told the Daily Times last night. “ The Early Settlers Association’s exhibition was really a triumph in bringing the story of Otago vividly before the present generation. It presents the sequence of history in a way that I have never seen bettered anywhere. The ‘ Cavalcade of Progress ’ was a miracle of co-operation and of beauty. It represented the highest form of artistry and ingenuity. “ The fireworks dsiplay was probably the largest ever esen in this country, and it provided a wonderful spectacle. I must also mention the girls’ marching which I saw on Wednesday. The marching in the grand finale made this a very happy event, and a really inspiring one.” The Prime Minister went on to pay his tribute to the people. He had been extraordinarily impressed by the orderliness and the co-operative spirit of the great crowds at the various functions. They gave a striking example of sell-discipline and . unselfishness. “Your people,” he said, “have been as wonderful in many respects as the events of the centennial week. They have been restrained, friendly and hospitable.” He had heard people say, Mr Fraser said, that the crowds were not sufficiently demonstrative. He believed, however, that they had viewed the celebrations with feelings that were deeper and more heartfelt than could be expresesd by the mere hand-clap-ping—there was, in the people’s attitude, a deep pride in the history of Otago and in its present position, and a quiet confidence in the future of the city and province. They were proud of- their achievements, proud of the celebrations, and everywhere there was an all-pervading happiness.

Mr Fraser in conclusion wished success to the people of Otago for the future celebrations, and said he was looking forward to returning later in March to take part in the anniversary celebrations.
