HIGH HONOUR

VERY REV. D. C. HERRON DOCTORATE OF DIVINITY AWARD BY ST. ANDREW'S UNIVERSITY . : ’Cabled advice has been received that the Senate of St. Andrew’s University, Scotland, has agreed to confer on the Very Rev. D. C. Herron, of Dunedin, the degree of doctor of divinity. Mr Herron is minister of Knox Church, Dunedin, and Chancellor of the University of Otago. The degree is being conferred in recqgnition of Mr Herron’s .distinguished service to the church and to education in New Zealand, and also in recqgnition of the centenary of Otago and Southland. Mr Herron is an Otago man, having been born at Pukerau, the son of pioneer settlers in that district. After a distinguished course at Otago University he studied theology at Glasgow

University, returning to New Zealand shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. Mr Heron served with distinction as a chaplain from 1915 to 1919, being awarded the M.C. with bar. On his return from service overseas he was called to St. David’s Church. Auckland, where he served for 11 years.' In 1930 he was called to Knox Church, Dunedin, his present charge. Mr Herron has served the wider work of the Presbyterian Church in many capacities, and has been the convener of several. importaht assembly committees, notably the Theological Hall Committee. He has occupied the highest office in the Presbyterian Church, that of moderator. of the General Assembly. In 1933 he. was elected a member of the Council of Otago University, and three years ago he was elected Chancellor, a position he holds at the present time. He is also a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. ... /( It is of .interest to recall that the University of St. Andrew’s conferred a similar distinction on an earlier minister of Knox Church, the Rev. D. M Stuart, who landed here in January. 1860. Twelve years later his alma mater, which, 30 years before, had expelled him on a point of conscience made this gratifying recognition of his services to the Presbyterian Church in Otago.
