MODERATE DEMAND
SALE OF BLOODSTOCK HIGHEST PRICE 600 GUINEAS Although there was a large catalogue of exceptionally well-bred bloodstock and crowded ringside, including owners from all over the South Island, the sale at Wingatui yesterday was somewhat disappointing. This was the first sale of its kind held in Dunedin for many years, and the promoters, Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., and Wright, Stephenson, Ltd., hoped that it would be the forerunner of annual sales.
Altogether 50 lots were offered, these comprising brood mares, yearlings, two-year-olds, and untried stock, but except for half a dozen of the choicer lots, bidding was generally sluggish, and it was only stimulated, and then only momentarily, by some particularly snappy " peptalks ” from the auctioneers. In several cases the final bid was only a few pounds short of the reserves fixed by the vendors. Of the 20 lots sold at auction, the highest price realised was for a Royal Chief — Spanish Main yearling colt, a half-brother to Spanish Main, which changed hands at 600gns, the purchaser being the wellknown Otautau studmaster, Mr Chisholm. The next best price was for another Royal Chief colt from Irish Dona, this also going to Mr Chisholm, the price being 550gns. Both these colts were offered on account of Messrs Falconer and Crosbie, North Taieri Sales were:— Brood Mares Account A. T. Douglass, Waikouaiti: Guardess, b m, Irish Lancer—Solrose; Wright.
