were supposed to get one egg a week but we considered ourselves lucky to see one a fortnight.” There was plenty of entertainment in the ship, Mr Hughes continued. Dr Bernardelli had complained about the noise, but the only noise during the entire voyage was occasioned by the celebration of Burns Night. Mr Hughes said that he wondered how Dr Bernardelli could take exception to that. He said he also wondered what the good Scotsmen and Scotswomen of Dunedin would think about it. The menu read:— Consomme Royale, Creme de Tomato; Fried Fillets of Plaice—Tartare Sauce: Sweetbreads Americaine; Braised Beef Macedoine, Roast Norfolk Turkey Chipolata, Cumberland Ham, Sauce Madere; Green Peas and Boiled Potatoes. Cold buffet: Rolled ox tongue, pressed beef, roast mutton; plum pudding, sweet sauce, vanilla ices; dessert, coffee.
