PLANTS CLOSE DOWN
COAL STRIKE IN SYDNEY STATE-WIDE UNEMPLOYMENT THREATENED Rec 0.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 23. A number of important developments took place in the coal strike to-day. The county council and railways department both applied for early introduction of light and power rationing. The Minister of Local Government. Mr J. J. Cahill, called an immediate executive conference but asked for details of stocks held by both organisations before making his decision. Two thousand employees of Sydney biscuit factories were put off work to-day as a result of the gas rationing. They are added to the 18,000 men already idle as a result of the dispute. Many other industries are preparing to close their plants The first industries' affected include building, brewing, canning, glass-making, and coke manufacture. Meanwhile, the New South Wales Trades and Labour Council, alarmed by the threat of State-wide unemployment, is beginnim? talks immediately.
