“DETERIORATING RAPIDLY”
»MILITARY SITUATION IN CHINA NO IMMEDIATE COLLAPSE WASHINGTON, Jan. 21. The military situation in China was “ deteriorating rapidly but there will be no immediate collapse of the Nanking Government,” said Major-general John P. Lucas to-day. For the past 18 months General Lucas has commanded the American military advisory group in China, which helps the Chinese Government with its military problems. ■' General Lucas added that the ‘‘•Government rests primarily upon the millions of farmers whose affairs are riot easily upset. Chiang Kai-shek is a very strong man who is not discouraged. He is confident of winning against the Communists.” General Lucas said that if China was given “ one year of peace and good crops the nation will be back on its ffiGt.** The British Ambasador in Shanghai, Sir Ralph Stevenson, has made fresh representations, this time in writing, to the Chinese Government over Friday’s anti-British rioting in Canton, daiming full compensation for British property destroyed. Sir Ralph Stevenson also asked for a full inquiry to establish the identity of the organisers and participants, and punishment of those responsible.
