OBITUARY

MRS ANNIE DORWARD Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, Jan. 23. Mrs Annie Dorward, Oamaru's oldest resident, died at a late hour last night, at the age of 99 years. Mrs Dorwatd celebrated her birthday last Tuesday, receiving Dominionwide felicitations and the cordial good wish that she would reach the century. She retained full possession of her

mental faculties, entering into conversation and joking with her daughters up to shortly before her death. Mrs Dorward was born in Breckin, Scotland, and was the last member of a family of 11. Her husband, Mr David Dorward, predeceased her in 1936. She is survived by her family of five daughters and three sons—Mrs James McLaren (Oamaru), Miss M. Dorward (Oamaru), Mrs H. Bryan (Dunedin), Mr A. Dorward (Hastings), Mr W. Dorward (Hastings), Mr G Dorward (Oamaru) and Mrs M. Conway (Auckland)—l4 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

MR MATTHEW ELLIOT

Mr Matthew Elliot, whose death occurred at Queenstown on Thursday, was born at Melbourne in 1889, and came to New Zealand in 1890, receiving his education at the Anderson’s Bay School. At the age of 14 he went to the Wakatipu district. Mr Elliot served in the Veterinary Corps in the First World War until the company was disbanded in Egypt. He was transferred to the Pioneer Battalion and went to France as a sergeant, being mentioned in despatches. In 1919 he entered partnership with Mr G. H. Hanfen to provide the first motor transport service in the Queenstown district. He later sold his business and began dairy and agricultural farming. In 1920 he married Miss Catherine Gorrie Butel, of Arrowtown. He was a prominent sportsman and held various executive positions' on patriotic and welfare services during the recent war. At tne time of his death he was chairman of directors of the Lake County Dairy Factory, chairman of the Arrowtown School Committee, and secretary of the Defence Rifle Club. He leaves a widow, three sons and three daughters.
