FLYING BOAT’S MISHAP

COMMISSION OF INQUIRY OPENING ON WEDNESDAY PA AUCKLAND, Jan. 18. The sitting in Wellington on Wednesday of the commission appointed by the Government to inquire into the mishap to the Tasman Empire Airways flying boat in New Zealand, which returned to Sydney on December 3 after sending out a distress signal, will be attended by Mr J. H. Harper, chief inspector of accidents of the Commonwealth Department of Civil Aviation, who has arrived here by air. Mr Harper said that although the inquiry was ordered by the New Zealand authorities, it was felt that the aircraft had left from Australia and his Government should have some representation at the hearing. His task would be that of an observer but, if from the investigation any suggestions were, made for greater safety of air travel in Australia, he would take these back as recommendations to his Government.
