NEW ZEALAND LEMONS

SMALL QUANTITY EXPECTED BETTER SUPPLY OF CHERRIES The shipment of pineapples by the Mahana proved disappointing, the fruit being very wasty on arrival. The cases which appeared sound were sold by auction (all faults, if any) and most realised the ceiling price of 27s 6d a case. The whole shipment was sold in Dunedin because the condition of the fruit was too risky for forwarding to the country. A shipment of bananas arrived during the week by the Waimarino. The fruit was in good condition. .The Waitaki arrived during the week with a large shipment of oranges. The condition of the fruit was excellent and the oranges were a pleasure to handle after the previous shipments received from Australia. No lemons have been received for some time. A very small quantity of New Zealand-grown lemons is on its way down from the north. New Zealand lemons are now priced at 25s a case—an increase of 3s. Hothouse tomatoes from all districts have been in heavy supply in Dunedin and the market came back very quickly. Present values are almost Is per lb lower than they were at this time last year. Cherries are increasing in ,supply and the quality is improving. Supplies are likely to increase quickly because the weather -in Central Otago is very warm. Gooseberries are in good supply and the market is easier. Apples and pears are definitely finished for the season. Green peas are in full supply with prices on the low side. Broad beans are also selling at low rates. Lettuce are still in heavy supply with prices unpayable to growers. A good supply of new potatoes is being received in Dunedin from Nelson and small lots are arriving from Waimate. Rhubarb is meeting a better demand. Cabbage have firmed in value and cauliflowers are realising high prices. Cucumbers and asparagus are also realising good values. . Carrots and swedes remain practically unsaleable. White turnips are now coming forward. Leeks are - plentiful, with sales slow. Market Prices Ruling prices at the end of this week in Dunedin were:— Apples: Finished for season. Pears: Finished for season. Cherries: Choice, to 3s lb; others. Is 6d to 2s 6d lb. Strawberries: Choice, 3s 6d to 4s 6d a punnet;, others, 2s 6d a punnet. Tomatoes: Local, 2s 6d to 3s lb; Christchurch, 2s to 2s 8d lb; Nelson, Is 9d to 2s 4d lb. Gooseberries: 6d to 8d lb. Passionfruit: To 27s 6d a case. . Tree tomatoes: To Is 6d lb. Bananas: Green. 25s a casei Oranges: Town. 32s 6d a case; country, 31s 6d a case. Lemons: To arrive.
