GILDING DEFENDED
STATUE OF QUEEN VICTORIA BENEFICIAL EFFECT PREDICTED P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. The gilding of a statue of Queen Victoria in Wellington was recently the subject of a protest from the British Society of Sculptors. The Mayor of Wellington, Mr Appleton, was asked at a municipal election meeting last night on whose authority the statue was lacquered. Remarking that Mr R. O. Gross, the Auckland sculptor, had recently asked him the same question, Mr Appleton said he had agreed with one of the city engineers that it would be a good idea to lacquer the statue, which needed cleaning. He added that in two to three months’ time the statue would be a credit' to Wellington. “Queen Victoria will look better than she has done for years,” Mr Appleton concluded. “It is my considered opinion, and I have no apologies to make for lacquering her.”
