BAND CONTEST
FINE PERFORMANCES BY WOMEN JUDGE’S COMMENT The comment that women instrumentalists were reaching the stage where their performances would make men look to their laurels was made by the judges, Mr H. Osborn and Mr K. Smith, at a contest for B and C Grade bands at Gore on Saturday. Members of the Dunedin Ladies’ Brass Band performed with distinction at the contest, which was conducted under the auspices of the Otago and Southland Brass Bands’ Association. Results:— Cornet Solo (18 and under).—Miss N. Hood (Dunedin Ladies’) 84 points, 1; H. Harland (Southland Boys’) 81, 2; Miss D. O’Hara (Dunedin Ladies') and G. Penny (Southland Boys’) 80 (equal), 3. Instrumental Solo (18 and under).— I. Capitaneas (Southland Boys’) 83 points, 1; K. Clearwater (Southland Boys’) 80, 2; 1. Lamb (Southland Boys’) 79, 3. Cornet Solo (open).—G. M. Duncan (Gore Municipal) 87 points, 1; Miss N. Meenan (Dunedin Ladies’) 86, 2; Miss E. Keenan (Dundin Ladies’) 84, 3. Duet (open).—Miss N. Meenan and Miss Keenan 87 points, 1; Miss D. O’Hara and Miss B. Burt 86, 2; P. Wheeler and D. Gray (Port Chalmers Marine) and Miss J. Maxwell and Miss M. Hemsley (Dunedin Ladies’) 84 (equal), 3.—The judge commented that the winners gave one of the best performances he had heard. Trio (open).—Southland Boys’ 83 points, 1; Gore Municipal 80, 2. Quartet. —Gore No. 1 and Gore No. 2 87 points (equal),, 1; Dunedin Ladies’ 86, 2; Southland Boys’ No. 3 85, 3. The judge said that the playing of the Gore competitors was of an excellent standard. Instrumental Solo (open).—E. D. Henderson (Southland Boys’) 86 points, 1; Miss B. Burt 84, 2; E. Gray (Port Chalmers), D. C. McMath (Gore Muncipal) and N. Dixon (Caversham) 82 points (equal), 3. The official accompanist was Mrs D. E. Bonisch. After the contest members of the visiting bands ’ were the guests of the Gore Municipal Band at a dance.
