NOTES ON THE RACING

Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Nov. 9. The outstanding feature of the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday was the performance of Desert Girl in winning the Stewards’ Purse Handicap. She jumped out brilliantly, and was not headed at any stage. Her time of lmin 12sec for the six furlongs clipped l-ssec off Fleet Street’s Southland record. Desert Girl won with something in hand, and it was an impressive Stewards’ Handicap trial. Patmos showed amazing speed to get up for second, after missing the jump out and giving the leaders a big start. At the half-mile Lorna Leigh was well back, but she' finished with a terrific late run to get up for third. Wantwood failed badly after being prominent to the straight, where Our Maureen also compounded after being one of the leaders. Eriskay upset calculations in the Soldiers’ Memorial Handicap, in which she beat her stable mate, Salmon Spear, narrowly but well. Eriskav returned a substantial win dividend. Eriskay had charge immediately the field straightened up, and she stayed on to win well. Salmon Spear appeared to suffer several checks during the running. He was unable to get clear until Eriskay had the result in safe keeping. Signal Officer put up a fine New Zealand Cup trial under 10.4. He tailed off early, but joined the field at the half. Into the straight he was travelling wide out, and he came home with a great run, after a slight check In a photo finish, he beat Pride of Mossburn for third. The Winton Stakes went to Baygundi who fought out a good finish with Iglri, who tried to win all the way. Baygundi’s effort was a good one, as he lost some ground at the straight entrance, where he was giving Igiri three lengths. St. Bruno, a hot favourite, swung round at the start and took no part.
