Second Day of Metropolitan Meeting

BETTY MAXEGIN’S SIXTH WIN

Special to the Daily Times. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 9. Some good racing marked the second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting at Addington on Saturday.

There was a long inquiry following the Derby and it was not until more than two hours after the last race that a decision was announced. Objections were made against the first three horses, that against Congo Song was for squeezing Beckleigh on the rails near the finish, Beckleigh was alleged to have interfered with Red Flight at the entrance to the straight, while, as the inquiry proceeded there was a charge that Fortuna had also caused interference.

After lengthy evidence, it was decided not to interfere with the judge's placing but M. Holmes, D. C. Watts and F. R. August the respective drivers of Congo Song, Beckleigh, and Fortuna were each fined £25 for careless handling of their horses. Each of the drivers lodged an appeal against his fine.

There was another inquiry after the last race into the running of Maori Home, a strong favourite, but the explanation of his trainer and driver, V. Alborn, was accepted.

Le Lievrc Handicap Grattan Drive had a very easy win in the Le Lievre Handicap. Ann Scott set the pace with Certainty, Minmi Boy. Grattan Drive, Lady Ngaio, Wade Lane, and Lone Raider following until three furlongs from home. Grattan Drive then dashed to the front and was never troubled. Lady Ngaio held on to beat Lone Raider with Jackie Guy, Maudeen, and Checkmate following at intervals. Intermediate Sprint Maori Home was a hot favourite for the Intermediate Sprint Handicap. He started fr.om the rails but backed away when the tapes were released, drifting to last. Logan Rey led early, but Ingle Belmer headed him after two furlongs. Belhall, Worthy Gold and Bobby Burns being next. Plunder Bar moved up half a mile from home, where Maori Home made a smart run from the back, but did not carry on. Belhall joined the Ingle Belmer in the back stretch, with Worthy Gold handy. Belhall broke at the home turn and Worthy Gold went on to win easily from Logan Rey and Ingle Belmer, with Bobby Burns. Jack’s Son, and Gold Peg next. Maori Home was last.
