DATE FIXED FOR BURMESE INDEPENDENCE
RANGOON, Oct. 17,
The Burmese Cabinet has fixed January 6, 1948, as the date for the birth of the Republic of the Union of Burma, involving the formal transfer of power from Britain. Mr Attlee and Takin Nu have signed a treaty granting Burma independence from that date. President Truman has appointed a veteran officer of the United States Foreign Service, Mr Jerome K. Huddle, as first United States Ambassador to Burma.
