MILTON

REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL For the first time since 1929 representative football matches were played at Milton on Saturday. There was a large attendance. The first game was between two school teams from the Toko and South Otago High Schools, the former winning by 21 points to 9 after being nine points down at half time. An Otago Fourth Grade team met the South Otago Third Grade representatives in the principal curtain raiser, play being very even for most of the game. Dwan scored for Otago alter five minutes' play, and the South Otago forwards rallied and carried play well inside the Otago half when the backs secured, all handling before the ball reached Dunn on the wing, who went over to equalise. Lee scored and Graves converted, to give Otago the lead. Immediately after the resumption Otago scored a runaway try under the posts, which Lee converted, and shortly after, Swan scored his second try, and the score was 16—3 against South Otago. Aitkenhead kicked a penalty goal for the home team, and later made two good runs, which ended in tries by Burrow and Bolting, and the game ended with the score 16—12 in Otago’s favour. Mr T. Bedford (Milton) was the referee. South Otago was unfortunate in losing J. Beeby and W. Halliday, both requiring medical attention for injuries received. McKercher to score in the corner. The teams were evenly matched, and there was no further score before the spell ended. In the second half C. Simpson kicked a penalty goal for South Otago, and O. and J. Burn each scored tries, while 'A. Howley kicked a penalty for Metropolitan and N. Wilson scored after S. Sutherland had hit the cross bar with an attempted field goal. Features of the game were the hooking of C. Todd for Metropolitan in the first spell, and of A. Storer for South Otago in the second spell, while B. Haig and W. Turner, the respective half-backs, set their backs going with accurate passing. There was little between the two full-backs, C.
