CONTROL OF DAIRYING
SOUTHLAND CANDIDATE FOR BOARD VACANCY P.A. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 5. A unanimous decision to support the candidature of Mr J. McKenzie, of Seaward Downs, for the vacancy on the New Zealand Dairy Board caused by the appointment of Mr W. G. Macartney, of Christchurch, to the Dairy Produce Marketing Commission, was made at a representative meeting of Southland dairy factories to-day. Mr McKenzie is chairman of directors of the Seaward Downs Dairy Factory Company, a director of the New Zealand Co-operative Marketing Association, and a director of the South Island Dairy Association. About 50 per cent, of the factories in the province were represented at the meeting. c The opinion that there was no necessity for any Government representation on the New Zealand Dairy Board was expressed by Mr A. V. Hartley at the meeting. He pointed out that Ihe Government was represented on the Dairy Produce Marketing Commission and said he considered, for that reason, that control of the Dairy Board should be left entirely to the producers. There was no reason he could see why there should be a Government nominee on the Dairy Board, said Mr J. McKenzie. Another member in place of the Government nominee would assist greatly with the work. In supporting these opinions. Mr J. Johnston said that line of thought was being expressed through the whole of the industry, from one end of New Zealand to the other. The meeting passed a resolution expressing the view that Government representation on the board was not necesary.
