OBITUARY

CAPTAIN A. W. CREESE Captain Albert William Creese, former master of the motor-ship Hauraki, has died in Melbourne. Born in Bristol in 1883, Captain Creese served his apprenticeship in sail. He was chief officer of the Kaiapoi, Maheno, Niagara and Makura before taking command of the Kowhai in 1923. Subsequently he commanded 24 vessels in the Union Steam Ship Company’s fleet. He was in command of the Hauraki when she was captured by Japanese raiders in the Indian Ocean on July 12, 1942. Soon after the cessation of hostilities Captain Creese was found and placed in the care of the Australian authorities. He appeared to be recovering from the effiects of his internment, but in May, 1945, a relapse caused his removal to a military hospital. He is survived by his wife and one daughter.
