CHELANDRY STUD

DISPERSAL IN JANUARY WELL-KNOWN THOROUGHBRED NURSERY HOME OF NOTED WINNERS Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Sept. 2. The Chalendary Stud at Taramoa, near Invercargill, one of the best-known thoroughbred nurseries in New Zealand, is to be dispersed. A special sale of brood mares, voung stock and stallions, including Sir' Simper and Maniototo, will be held in January next. Breeding Ground of Champions' Founded by tbe late Mr W. T. Hazlett, the Chelandry Stud has played a leading part in placing Southland on the thoroughbred map. It was here that the late Mr Hazlett bred a host of champions, including Razzle Dazzle, Gold Light, Sir Simper, Noko, and Astra] Flame, besides being a recruiting ground for his Australian team. The trustees of the Hazlett estate have decided to submit all the stock for auction in January. The brood mares, which include some of the most highly prized in the country, will be mated With the two stud sires, Sir Simper and Maniototo this season. The majority, however, will be mated with Maniototo, a well-performed Australian-bred horse by Manitoba from Luminare, a Chief Ruler mare from Illume, a daughter of Simper. The progeny of the Chelandry Stud have enjoyed a remarkable run of success since the stud was founded 30 years ago. The three principal foundation mares were Simper (imp.), Sprig of Erin (imp.), and Directoire. Simper proved herself one of the most prolific producers in the history of the turf in New Zealand, her produce winning a total of £34,742 in stakes, a figure which placed her in the first half-dozen of New Zealand's great brood mares. From Simper Mr Hazlett bred Gold Light, Beacon Light, Razzle Dazzle, Sir Simper, and others, and it has been the influence of Simper which has played such an important part in the success of Chelandry stock down through the years. A Noted Sire Sir Simper, a high-class racehorse in Australia, finishing third in the Caulfield Cup, has made a name for himself at the stud in siring such winners as Noko, Anglo-French (Grand National Steeples), Irish Wit, Kassai, Geniality, Lisheen, Aldis Lamp, and numerous other winners. The daughters and granddaughters of Simper have bred on with marked success, the most striking instance of their worth being given by Flight, the greatest stakewinning inare in Australia and New Zealand. Flight, who was retired to the stud last season, won a total of £30,627. She was out of Lambent (dam also of the Dunedin Cup winner Sparkle), whose dam, Dazzling Light, was a daughter of Simper. Directoire’s Fine Record The family founded by Directoire made a name for itself in producing high-class jumping winners. Directoire produced seven individual winners of 58 races and 107 placings for a total of £12,844 in stakes, her winners including Frenchman, Moulin Rouge, Apache, Taramoa, and Paris. One of Directoire’s daughters in Dark Marie became the dam of Noko, one of the finest jumping winners to carry the Hazlett livery in recent years, while a granddaughter of Directoire in Lorette (out of Moulin Rouge) left a Grand National Steeplechase winner in AngloFrench and another useful winner ill Colonel French.
