NEW HEALTH STAMPS

SALE ON OCTOBER 1 The Postmaster-. General, Mr Hackett, has made available a photograph of the 1947 Health stamps which will be on sale on October 1 next. The stamps have already arrived from London, where .they were produced by the well-known stamp printers, Messrs Waterlow and Sons. "The design, which was prepared by Mr James Berry, of Wellington, has been reproduced beautifully on the stamps,” said

Mr Hackett, “ and the photograph scarcely does justice to the intricate work of the engravers.” Commenting on the design, Mr Hackett explained that it was based on the famous “ Eros ” statue in Piccadilly Circus, London, which had been erected as a memorial to the great English philanthropist, the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury. Shaftesbury was largely responsible for the early English Factory Act regulating the employment of children in factories and abolishing the exploitation of child labour. The stamps are in the usual two denominations —Id postage plus Jd health fgieen), and 2d postage plus Id health (red).
