A PROMISING HALF

I. Cameron, the University A halfback, gave a promising display when his side defeated Pirates at Carisbrook last Saturday. Cameron has been a member of the University C team in the Second Grade competition for most of the season, but he has played two or three games for the A’s, and is the most likely looking half-back the light blues have tried this season. His work on the blind side is particularly effective, and it paved the way for two tries on Saturday, Cameron was captain of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School first fifteen before coming to Dunedin, and as he is only 21 his future career will be watched with interest. He is a nephew of the Mayor of Dunedin, Mr D. C. Cameron, and his father, the late Mr W. B. Cameron, played for the Zingari-Richmond Club some 40 years ago, being contemporary with Mr B. Collie, the present Otago selector.

DEPENDABLE BACK It would be difficult to estimate the value to the Taieri team of its first five-eighth, J. McLeod. He has not played a poor game this season, and his sense of anticipation is revealed by the way he appears from nowhere to clear in the face of dangerous rushes by opposing teams. The main weakness in his play is a tendency to kick too much, but, with comparatively inexperienced backs outside him, it is possible that this is a mailer of tactics He certainly saves his forwards by excellent line kicking with both feet. A deceptive change of pace and a proclivity for “ selling the dummy” are assets which helped him to make a number of solo breaks against Dunedin on Saturday, and he scored one excellent try after running through half of the opposing team. JUNIOR MEN’S HOCKEY The following are the cup points of the teams in the A section of the Junior Grade hockey competition:— Albany C 3. University C 2. High School 2, University E 2, H. 5.0.8. 1, University F 1. Opoho 0. Oooho. University C, E, and F have played only one game.

LACK OF FINISH

The Dunedin backs gave a sparkling display of open football against Taieri on Saturday, but once again lack of finish prevented the addition of more points to their tally. The second fiveeighth, R. McCormack, gave one of his best performances of the season, and added thrust' to the attack, beside-, doing a tremendous amount of work 'on defence. He combined well with the inside man, W. Lawrence, who handled splendidly and kicked with judgment, but marred his display by apparent reluctance to go down in front of forward rushes. Towards the end of the match the Dunedin backs threw the ball about with reckless abandon in an effort to score, but the defence held, and Taieri again registered a narrow victory over the town team.
