SECRET BALLOTS

UNIONS SUPPORT MEASURE Strong support for the secret ballot amendment clause to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act has been expressed by four Otago trade unions. The following are the four, unions concerned:—Dunedin and Suburban Butchers' Union, Otago and Southland Caretakers, Cleaners. Lift Attendants, and Watchmen’s Union; Otago Grocers’ Union; and the Otago branch of the Printing and Related Trades’ Union. A statement issued to the DailyTimes last night explained that these unions thought it imperative, for the benefit of the industrial trade union movement, to have secret ballots before deciding upon strike, action. .It added that they had faith in the Government and the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan. in bringing down the glause.
