EIRE REJECTED
MEMBERSHIP OF UNITED NATIONS RUSSIAN VETO EXERCISED Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 18. Russia cast her twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth vetoes in the Security Council to-day when Mr Gromyko voted against the membership applications of Eire, Transjordan and Portugal. Mr Gromyko's action followed rejection by the Western Powers of the membership applications by Albania and Outer Mongolia. Mr Gromyko said he was unable to support Eire because of her war record and her “ friendly relations with the Axis ” and that Transjordan was unacceptable because her sovereignty was questionable. He said that whatever sovereignty Transjordan enjoyed was the result of unilateral action by Britain, whom nobody had empowered to act. The council voted unanimously to recommend the admission of the Arab Kingdom of Yemen and new Dominion of Pakistan. The two Moslem States will become the fifty-sixth and fiftyseventh members when they are given routine sanction by the General Assembly.
