LONG STRIKE ENDED
CHEMICAL FACTORY WORKERS CAUSTIC SODA SUPPLIES AFFECTED SYDNEY, Aug. 19. The 10-month-old strike at the Botany Bay works of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., has ended at last, ana there are prospects that resumption of the manufacture of caustic soda will ease the grave soap shortage. A mass meeting of strikers decided by an overwhelming majority to ac;ept a compromise proposal which win give them some pay increases. The men had demanded a general weekly increase of 10s as a disability ■.allowance. They have accepted an ektra 7s 6d a week when employed in certain specified departments which the company agreed warranted extra pay ment. The men will also receive the axtra rate payable under the new Federal metal trades award. As the majority' of the strikers now nave other jobs, and will have to give notice, full resumption of work is noi expected until the end of the month. As a result of the strike there is an acute shortage af alkalis, basic industrial chemicals, and medical chemicals.
