MEDICAL SCHOOL

SECOND YEAR CLASSES A decision that the form of application for admission in 1948 to secondyear classes in medicine should, with some slight amendments, be the same as that used in 1947 was made by the University Council at its monthly meeting yesterday. The special committee set up to consider the admission to second-year classes also recommended that the same preference that was granted to servicemen should be accorded men of the British merchant navy who were regarded by the Rehabilitation Department as eligible for full-time rehabilitation assistance. The committee also reported that it had considered the admission of overseas students to first and second-year medical classes. The committee recommended that overseas candidates for admission to second-year classes be not granted admission except under special circumstances approved by the council and that applications for admission to first-year classes be notified that, even if they should be admitted by the University of New Zealand, the difficulty of gaining admission to the second-year classes was so great that they were strongly advised not to come to New Zealand. The recommendations were adopted.
