WIN FOR UNION

UNSPECTACULAR GAME Few bright movements were seen in the game at the North Gifound, in which Union beat Port Chalmers by 9—3. Neither side played up to its best form, and spoiling tactics predominated. The result was that the scoring was kept to a minimum and play was hard but unspectacular. , Within a minute of the start of play Union had scored a try. Pringle took advantage of faulty backing up by Port Chalmers backs and went over in the comer after a good run. Five minutes later H. Ives scored for Port Chalmers from a dribbling rush. After 15 minutes’ play Union took the lead again when T. Freeman kicked a long penalty goal. , Much of the good work done by the Port Chalmers forwards was lost through poor passes from the base of the scrum, enabling the fast-breaking Union forwards to come through on to Peck, the full-back. Holden scored a. try for Union late in the game that clinched the result in favour of the home side. Henderson and Mains stood out in the Port Chalmers pack and T. Gensik and Holden were the pick of the Union forwards. Freeman and Peck, the full-backs, both did some good defensive work and aided their forwards with a number of long line-kicks. Glengarry at first fiveeighth for Union played a solid game both on defence and attack, and opened up some promising movements. The Port Chalmers back line was seldom seen in combined passing attacks. Mr L. Stewart was the referee.
