Reinforcement of Punjab Forces

Rec. 11 p.m. NEW DELHI, Aug. 17. The Indian and Pakistan Joint Defence Council decided to reinforce immediately forces in the Punjab. Earl Mountbatten presided at the meeting, which was attended by the Com-mander-in-chief. Field-marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, Mr Nehru, and the Pakistan Premier, Liaquat All Khan. The Punjab boundary force on Thursday and Friday was fired on by Sikh and Moslem mobs who took prisoners in several areas. The Hyderabad Government has ordered the arrest of Ramanand Thirt, a president of Congress in the Hyderabad States, and other prominent Congress leaders. The arrests follow the Congress passive resistance campaign against the Nizam’s decision to make Hyderabad an independent State.
